Recently i noticed Cravendale are on twitter. I like the Cravendale ad's so decided to follow them and see what they had to offer. What i've found so far is uninteresting and unsuprising.

After seeing their TV ad's you'd think they would have a bit of a quirky personality, maybe use the characters they've established in the ads? Include some humour? Atleast talk in the same tone of voice?

What i actually found was very uninspiring. It feels like a marketing guy is sitting there. It's definatly not a pirate, cow or cyclist. One of the things they've decided to do is come up with these 'catchy' ways of making Cravendale 'interesting'.

Perhaps it's just me but this seems self-indulgent, off the point and frankly pretty boring. It feels like an ad, it feels like they're trying to sell you. Trying to convince you of something. When in actual fact, if you're reading their tweets, It means you went online, searched for Cravendale and then actually spent time following them or atleast looking at their profile. So you have given them that much attention already, now you've done that you need to be rewarded. Unfortunetly it doesn't really feel like their doing that.

Feels like a missed opportunity. I'm not talking about doing things to 'Dell' proportions or the success that Ford have found by using twitter, milk is a low interest catagory after all. But adding something that makes you feel good about them is all they need, rather than feeling like you took a punt on something and didn't get much back in return.

Because next time i see a bottle in the supermarket this is what i'll remember.

Advertising Doesn't Work

There's nothing better than some nice bread. But what butter do you put on it?

I recently had to get a job to earn some extra cash. Unfortunately that place would be Tesco.

So it's boring, it's mid numbing and all the rest of it. But i thought since I'm here putting peoples shopping through the till i might as well do some research.

So i've started to notice what kind of butter people buy. And it's actually quite surprising.

I've always bought Lurpak, however it's not particularly popular with people I serve.

The most popular is Tesco English butter, okay that's not really surpising.

Except Anchor butter is only 3p more expensive than Tesco English butter.

Now i quite like Anchor ad's and i've been tempted to try it.

But the pattern that i've seen emerging out of my crude 'research' is that..

Advertising doesn't work.

Now of course, it does to a certain degree but there is far more to it.

To make your TV/Print/Poster/Digital ad's work, you need a follow through.

This isn't something you really think about when creating ad's for your book but it seems really quite important when you think about it.

Whenever the latest Lurpak ad's break on TV, the posters follow on outdoor media, then shelf promotions begin in supermarkets like Tesco and the price of the product drops, it's on offer, it's BOGOF. It's cheaper and that's always tempting.

And that is how advertising really works.

You need follow through, promotions and displays to catch the attention of your audience, not just a big 90' Second TV ad and some 48 Sheets.

On my rough estimation Country Life & Kerrygold butter, alongside Tesco English are the best selling. They're not the cheapest or the most advertised (Tesco English aside)

Advertising Does Work

So with it being a new year, you'd think it'd be right to make some resolutions. This year i haven't really done that but what i have done is started buying Innocent Smoothies. This being for a number of reasons.

I always liked the idea of Innocent smoothies as eating fruit just doesn't appeal to me (just when would you actually choose to eat it?) Anyway i never really bought these smoothies because i thought they were too expensive.

However.

Since they started advertising them as 2 of your 5 a day, something changed.

I've bought a big carton pretty much every week. I don't think they're as expensive because they now have a real value to me rather than just something to have when i want a drink.

Positioning it as a health essential in my case. Making me actually feel good about buying it, rather than feeling like it's a waste of money or too expensive.

This was backed up by their new campaign. The one with the Rabbits.

Personally i think they are just the old ad's with a Rabbit in them. The scripts are poor and the closing frame should show all the flavours they do.

But since seeing the ad's & following them on Twitter i actually went out and bought the product and have continued to do so.

Every once in a while you see an Ad you really like. It makes you stop what you're doing and look. Then it ends and you carry on.

This ad for the RAC made me do that recently. Great shots, great direction, great music.

Job done so i thought.

Until the other day, i saw the same ad on TV.

This time it had a voiceover. (Can't find it on YouTube)

Telling you how the RAC can help you, be there first and do all the things you need to get you back on the road.

It always interests me to see this happen.

The ad gets made.

The figures don't change.

The ad gets scrutinized.

Put a voiceover on it.

Put the ad out again.

Then what?

Who knows if it now works. They are lucky that a voiceover can be so easily put over the top of this ad, there will be many more out there that simply can't be changed all that much and that adds up to a lot of wasted cash & time.

According to an article in the paper, Branston are Britain's favourite.

Heinz Beanz came out 5th favourite after a shock taste survey among supermarket shoppers, conducted my Which?.

The standings are;

1. Branston

2. Aldi

3. Asda.

4. Morrisons

5. Heinz

I always buy Heinz because it's what i've always had. I've tried Branston but i never switched. Maybe the recession has caused the public to rethink their bean buying.

So it seems everyone hated this Warburton's ad last year, with the guy seeing Warburtons everywhere.

I have to say, i wasn't particularly keen on it either (their bread tastes of cardboard too)

However over the last two months, my opinion has been slightly warped. I keep seeing Warburtons lorries every day, when i say everyday, i mean every single day, whenever i'm driving around, driving home at night, just whenever. I see them CONSTANTLY. (Perhaps because i live in Newcastle & the Ad was shot there..) (Maybe not.)

So maybe it isn't all 'adland' and is actually a truth?

35-40 I'm still very much aware of today's music, there are a lot of incredible bands out there, even these days. I'll never get caught in some retro trap.

It seems that brands want to be loved. Thats a fair assumption.

But wanting to be loved isn't very good, when they have no intention of making it happen.

You watch TV and see Ad after Ad that could be for anything, no real style or feel.

It's all wallpaper, until you get a nice little animation which splits it up. You take notice.

Brands have to polarize. they have to be the 1 out of 6 ad's that you actually see in a tv break.

The circle not the square.

But it seems like they just expect to be loved.

How about actually doing something non conventional? Doing something for people. Make them laugh. Help them with a problem. Do these things and you can still make money. Infact you can make more money.

Essentially, what i'm talking about is Marmite.

Marmite. You either love it or you hate it.

Around 40 consumers have been invited to join the ‘Marmarati' secret society. To create a new variant product using Marmite. People actually want to do that. Why? Who knows. Who cares? They want to be involved, so let them.

Say people hate your brand and talk about it on facebook and twitter. The thing to remember is they still talk about it. You're in the discussion. You're there and now you're in there you can change peoples minds. Be news worthy, be interesting.

There is nothing worse than being ignored.

You're in a band. You have no money, no record label, no manager, no tour bus.

You have a bunch of songs you've written. You have a myspace with 1000 plays but what can you do to really get noticed?

Be clever.

This is a way that a lot of people are choosing to promote themselves.

Taking an upcoming release from a major band and releasing leaks of their songs. or rather titling your songs as a leak from their album.

It gets hits, it gets press. People say they love it. But then it comes out it's not them.

What's to gain from this? You get people to listen to your music first of all.

Will they actually visit your myspace? Buy your CD's? Become a fan? Who knows.

Here is an example.

What are the long term benefits of this?

Well looking at a similar example from a couple of years ago,

Coldplay released Viva La Vida with a lot of controversy.

A band called Creaky Boards said they'd ripped them off.

(okay it's not exactly the same but go with it)

There was a lot of press about it.

So where are they now?

Well they have just 3000 friends on myspace.

If that's anything to go by then the jury is still out on this one.

Targeting your Market

Many would deem this the best Lynx commercial produced by BBH London.

A lovely film that stands apart from the dross of most commercials and even some programmes.

It shows great thinking, great direction, a lovely soundtrack and a subtle idea that is slowly released, which in the end shows the product to be the king.

But it didn't work.

It was apparently the worst performing Lynx ad done to date.

Sales didn't shoot up. Men didn't rush out to buy a can.

And that is the very real truth of the state of most advertising.

Done to win awards, done to look great, done to sound great.

But talking to the right people, no. Selling product, no.

The people who buy Lynx paid no attention, it wasn't right for them. It was too intelligent, it was too complex, too slow, too subtle.

and that is a real lesson to someone like me. Trying to get a job in this industry. In this climate.

Gloom, doom and the recession kaboom has lead TalkTalk to give away free moneys.

Personally I'm sure i speak for everyone, when saying i hate broadband providers.

I've been trying to change mine for the past week and god do they make it difficult. But i digress.

This is the news that TalkTalk have employed 20 'put-pocket' to drop money into peoples pockets, coats and bags over the coming weeks. Giving you something back in these difficult morbid times, to make people feel better.

Although i sound sarcastic, this actually sounds like a great idea, with them planning to back it by giving out £100,000 (from £5 up to £20) and launching it UK wide.

Just tell me when and where and i'll be sure to bring an empty suitcase.

I've just seen a programme on Dave called "should I worry about my spending?"

Basically showing how small changes can change our spending habits.

He did an experiment in a supermarket moving the Heinz baked beans down a shelf from the prime spot and moving other items around.

Sales of the products in the prime locations, like the end of the isles or at eye level on the shelves increased from 100% up to 500%

Makes you think about all these expensive advertising campaigns that never get seen or fail to sell products.

Why not pay to get it in more stores or in better positions in those stores?

Its all the fault of the emotional side of your brain.

Graham Hall (of DDB London) has got a job at Y&R New York.

He's leaving DDB along with the head of planning (who's going to Ogilvy New York)

Some of his best work as presented by the ridiculously annoying Brand Republic presenter.

Free Budweiser

Four becomes two. Fallon are the latest agency to drop out of the Budweiser pitch.

Declining to repitch, but perhaps with good reason.

Turns out all the agencies pitching must produce 3 fully formed campaigns in two weeks,

as well as also waiver any rights to the work.

Therefore Budweiser could actually use all 12 campaigns (if all 4 agencies pitched) without

appointing any of them.

So now it's down to just RKCR/Y&R and DDB London to pitch for the business.

Really you can't blame TBWA/ or Fallon for this, who wants to put all the work in when there is a good chance

you won't get anything out of it at all.

It's not like ABInBev are strapped for cash, they just bought Budweiser for literally billions of dollars!

First casualty of the Budweiser pitch. TBWA/ Media Arts London have decided not to pitch. With Tim Lindsay giving the reasons for this on his new blog here (or you can read below)

Long story short, they are simply to busy with existing clients and all the upheaval of moving into one office, to deal with such a big pitch, in such a short space of time

This could have been a big one for TBWA/ after all the trouble they've been having, with redundancies and account's jumping ship. Perhaps they can start their creative revival on an existing account, they do still have some good 'uns after all.

TOUGH DECISION

We had to make a really tough decision today.

You may have read on the front page of Campaign that Budweiser have asked us to pitch for their UK business. (What’s happening round at Fallon, by the way?). It’s a great brand and arguably a chance for glory, but an incredibly tough brief and a very short space of time in which to deliver it. We would have had to throw an enormous amount of resource at it – which would have consumed the agency for the next three weeks.

Trouble is, we’ve got a huge amount on. Two huge and exciting international pitches. Another big regional pitch about to walk in next week (we hope). Two RFIs from the AAR. A big Nissan task about to land. Lot’s of work on PlayStation in preparation for the arrival of a new European President. In August. When a lot of people are obviously on the beach. Oh yes – and with 150 Dean Streeters about to come up the road and move in with us.

So we’re not going to do Bud. It’s a tough call (and I can promise you Matt, Mark, Tom M, Julie, Ed and I went full circle on it at least twice this morning) but it’s the right call. We have to be able to do what we’re already committed to do well. And our first obligation is to existing clients.

I thought I detected a slight flicker of relief on Tom C’s and Paulo’s faces when they heard the news. Thanks for the work you put in chaps, it won’t go to waste.

You can imagine the quality of Clarkson and Captain Slows advert; for the VW Scirocco, wasn't quite up to the standard of DDB and Mr Craigen, nor the head of Volkswagen.

Mr Volkswagen client had out his 'How to write a Volkswagen advert' rule guide out for them, to which they would obviously pay no attention to.

But why do they love it? Not for the cheesy pun.

But because of the character and the personality? (a la Webster)

To be fair to Comparethemarket.com they are backing it and pushing the campaign as far as they can and are being rewarded for it. Making people talk about an insurance comparison site!

But with this campaign being such a success.

Why aren't more brands using a character or personality? Is it now going to become cool again? or is it still a creative no-no?

Heineken have been using a character in the US, 'The Most interesting man in the world' which has increased sales of their import brand so should brand characters be back on the table?

It's Pitch O'Clock

Budweiser has decided it wants a change.

The UK account (Fallon) and the Ireland account (DDB) are both up for pitch.

As well as Budweiser, Beck's has also decided they want a new agency. According to Campaign, Lowe resigned the account but it sounds mutual.

So that's £5.5 million for Budweiser and £25 million for Beck's.

Of course both are owned by Inbev so it's no real surpise their both up for pitch.

When brands go up for pitch i always assume they're not happy with how the ad's are going at the moment, but i'm sure there is more to it than that.

But can anyone remember the last great beer ad?

Sure, the Bud spot up there is good but it's not something you will remember like Wassup or John Smiths (TBWA/London are on the pitch list for Budweiser). Beck's latest spot below didn't exactly blow me away, i know it's said beer is such a difficult product to advertise but it's also one of the briefs everyone seems to want too.

Great book i'm reading at the moment.

Sharp, short and very matter of fact.

Nice to read something with a different kind of tone and i always admire writers who can keep you interested whilst nothing much seems to have developed in an obvious story line kind of way.

First of all, no i haven't adopted a Polar Bear. But it's possible to adopt anything from a Polar Bear to a Donkey these days.

This appears to be a simple and straight forward idea but look at charity advertising on the whole and it's actually a lot of cleverer.

How do you solve a problem like getting people to give to charity? Give them something back.

You never meet the animal you adopt (i assume they don't actually exist?)
But it's a brilliant idea that gains your initial interest and then maintains it for a significant period after the original donation.

As Dave Trott would say, simple preditory thinking. Executed brilliantly.

It then gets uploaded to their website http://teepay.com

and then every t-shirt is available to vote for.

Basically if enough people pledge a vote to buy your design, it then goes into production with the designer of the T-shirt getting a slice of the profits!

It was brought together by these lovely people.

So i'm guessing most people have seen Rubberduckzilla by now. I'm not really sure what to think of it, is it a bit crap? Or will it actually be something that stands out amongst a lot of dross?

Anyway after seeing serveral phonebox's with Oasis posters on i decided to go on the website and see what else they were doing to extend the campaign.

I found 3 arcade type games, using that technology of holding up a symbol to a webcam to show a rubberduck (bit like E.ON did with the F.A Cup online stuff http://www.campaignlive.co.uk/theWork/news/905110/gallery/4729/page/2/#4729 )

Not overly impressed as it's a bit fiddly and can't see people having the patience to print out things and then deal with a hit and miss technology for games that aren't all that fun really.

So i've heard a lot about this Bing.com

A new search engine by Microsoft, except they're calling it a 'decision engine'

it's more than a search engine apparently.

Now it may just be me, but i've used it and searched a few things. Asked a few things and it seems very 'googley', on first glance i can't see any major differences with searches and more to the point i don't see any reason to change to using Bing.com for my searching needs.

Looking at it on a very basic level, i'm actually wondering why it exists?

Do we have no search engines - NO

Do the ones we have not work? - NO

Is there actually any need for a new one? - NO

Is it just me is there something very google again. But it looks like it's been designed by a 12 year old who just found out that Powerpoint exists?

Again i also have a problem with the ad's they've just launched in support of it. I have a problem with a lot of this stuff don't i?

JWT New York are usually brilliant, but this ad at over a minute long is just bizarre. They go on about this and that, failing to tell you what it's about for at least half of film.

Now wouldn't it have been a better idea to create 20 x 5 second executions of a search and a result. Actually showing it's effective and not talking a load of gibberish. Surely this 'decision engine' is supposed to get you the right results FAST?

Or why not do something ONLINE the medium that it's actually based in?

How many people have Google as their home page when they load up their internet browser? (i do)

Why not try and change online users actions with a campaign to replace your home screen? Wouldn't that be targeting the right people as well as actually producing results at the same time?

Time will tell what will happen with bing. Even so going after Google seems extremely naive from Microsoft. We already have Yahoo and Ask? amongst a hundred others.

Do they really think they can topple Google with this half hearted attempt?

As everyone knows, the man who discovered America was poorly rewarded for his efforts.

Chistopher Columbus made the mistake of looking for gold and keeping his mouth shut.

Amerigo Vespucci didnt. He was 5 years behind Christopher. But he did 2 things right.

First, he positioned the New World as a separate continent, totally distinct from Asia. This caused a revolution in the geography of his day.

Second he wrote extensively of his discoveries and theories. Especially significant are the five letters of his third voyage. One (Mundus Novus) was translated into 40 different languages over a 25-year period.

Before he died, Spain granted him Castilian citizenship and gave him a major state post.

As a result, the Europeans credited Amerigo Vespucci with the discovery of America and named the place after him.

Christopher Columbus died in jail.

It struck me recently how bizarre this photograph is.

One of hundreds of Swift-cover car insurance posters that are displayed at Metro station platforms, a system where thousands of people travel to work by train.

I'm fully aware a lot of these people may own a car and simply travel by the Metro system for convenience, but surely this is the wrong medium to be advertising in.

If it was a one off poster then fair enough, but almost every Metro station seems to have multiple posters like this.

The same day i saw the same poster as a bus back, the ideal medium for it.

For insurance that claims it saves you money, they don't half waste a lot of it.

Like absolutely anything is on there, all really interesting and gets you thinking. Each one is about 15-20mins long. Seriously recommend you go have a look! Everyone can find something they're interested in.

What is the secret ingredient for a mediocre bank advert?

A man in a hat? A nice shiny credit card?

No, nothing is more comforting in times of financial trouble than.. a cake and an airbed.

A lovely homemade cupcake (because you can't afford food anymore so you'll have to use the contents of the cupboard to supplement it) A water air bed (reminding you you'll never be going on holiday again, ever) a steering wheel from a car (that looks like a toy, since you had to sell your real car) and a lovely HSBC credit card that made all this misery possible.

I've lost count of the amount of times i've seen Cupcakes on bank adverts. Surely this doesn't sell bank cards, and if it does it shouldn't!

Just finished recording and mastering an album with my band which has been like pulling teeth but is now sounding really good and is great to have finished. Now just to sort the packaging side of out and it's ready to go. Tonight i have one of those feelings that apply to numerous things.

The feeling you get where you just wonder what is the point? Why do you believe that something good might happen and ask what is the point in still believing?

Yes, yes, yes it's only a game and it's not really that important but it's not really just that. It's one of those situations where you just want an answer. You just want to know why. What is the point. I'm not the number one fan but there just doesn't seem to be anyone that could do that job, he was the only guy who when i heard had been appointed was i genuinely excited about. No one else could have done that and it's just sad that it ends forever like that. You all stopped reading near the top when you realised what this was about, but it's more of a general why? then specifics. whether its a game or the 'real' things. it's still important.

Gutted.

Somers Town

Today i saw Somers Town. As most people will be aware it was written by Mother and directed by Shane Meadows. It was really simple and gave the story a very real and genuine feel. It felt untainted and very straight forward which i liked alot. Beautifully shot, i'm not a fan of black and white film but this felt like it should be, colour seemed to give the story to much distraction. One of my favourite things about it was the soundtrack. Lovely folk instrumentals interrupted the dialogue and it just felt like a very honest film of an everyday story. Anyone seen it?

So i've had a bit of a busy time this last week. Placement has been great, learning so much about working in an agency and how reviews/meetings/clients all work. Obviously it differs in every agency but it's all really really interesting. Had some ridiculously funny moments as well so it's all good fun. Been working on about 3 briefs this week, as well as attending some 5-a-side football after work and a party at a local production company which was great. Meeting loads of new people and it's great being able to get insight like this into the industry, invaluable stuff that you just can't get from a course.

Working on my book on the weekends also, it's really starting to pull together now. Pretty exciting, i feel like it''s so much better than my last stuff already but obviously time will tell. Getting good feelings though and all the hard work seems to be paying off.

I am feeling pretty run down with working all week and then doing my book on a weekend but i'm finding time for other things too and i'm enjoying myself so that's the main thing.

I'm seeing things alot clearer now and really trying to look at Brands and how they are successful and the ways people are using advertising to re-enforce their brand messages. I used to watch some ad's and go 'that's shit' or 'thats not funny' etc but i've kind of stopped myself recently and thought does it work? Does it serve the purpose for the target market? Am i part of it? and trying to look at the thought processes behind it all.

Maybe i'm driving myself mad but i think i've been enlightened in the last 2 weeks about alot of things.

Another 2 weeks of placement to go, it feels like i've just started really but i'm going to make sure i take everything i can from it whilst i'm there.

Well this blogging every day isn't going great since i missed the last two days but i'll round up now.

Had a review for some work on wednesday and been in a pre production meeting this afternoon in preparation for the shoot tomorrow. So i'm going along for that which will be great experience. Working on a couple of other briefs and settling in. Really cool place to work, been reading some books today whilst wandering, one of which being 'Norwegian Fairy Tales' which was very interesting and looking through annuals that i haven't seen. It's great being in an agency and just taking notice of what goes on and how it all works from the idea to the production of it. Very interesting. Also had a chat with a guy in a London agency about what i should be doing and asking about his experiences so all very relevant.

Maybe some exciting news tomorrow, but will have to wait and see!

Day One

Well i'm sitting in a bar in Edinburgh after a good 3/4 hours trying to arrange something so that i'm not sleeping on a street corner! Numerous plan's have fallen through but i've got a bed tonight and hopefully i'll have everything sorted for a month by tomorrow lunch time! With it being Edinburgh fringe festival it's a bit mental but should be a good month as there will always be something good going on!

On topic; My first day was good! Two hour drive up to Edinburgh, arriving early for a nice change! A few short introductions and on with my first brief, i haven't asked if i can talk about what i'm doing yet but i'll just leave it that it's one of the major accounts. Agency has a really nice feel about it and had time to sit out in the garden and take in some sun on my lunch. Not much else to report until i know what i can and can't say.
I'll stick some pictures tomorrow!

Until then i'm going to enjoy my well deserved pint!

The First Placement

So, off to Edinburgh and NewHaven tomorrow. Really looking forward to getting my first agency experience. I'm going to try and update the blog with what i'm doing each day and maybe even post some pictures/videos if i get a chance.

Been working on the book the last few weeks and got 2 campaigns pretty much sorted and started on a third. So the new book is well on it the way. I feel like the work is much more focused and clear, something that some of my last books work wasn't. I think i've improved my thinking over the last few months and hopefully that will show in the work.

Opportunity

Since my London visit in June, i've been really busy with things both to do with Advertising and things out of it. Latitude Festival, Touring with my friend Jack Summer for 2 weeks, Recording an album with my band. A lot has happened and now things are just gathering speed.

I'd hoped to being going back to London in early August with a brand new book, but with my NewHaven placement i've put it back until i am ready again. I was trying to rush my book along a few weeks ago and get it together in time to take down but i've decided to take time and make sure i'm taking all the advice i've been given, part of that is giving the new campaigns space to breath and then looking at them fresh and picking holes myself. Hopefully that will be productive when it comes to going back down in the coming Months.

I have a few project's on the go at the moment. Currently putting together something for Stu @ Mother to follow on from his advice in June. And also i'm putting together a film of sorts and other bits of bobs for various people.

Some exciting times coming up i hope. Loads to do, Loads to do.

Back in the barrel

Well i'm finally back from nearly a month of neglecting the blog!

During the last 3 weeks i've been on tour with my friend Jack, travelling around the UK. Great for some inspiration and seeing new places, meeting new people. Had a great time but glad to be back home!

Also been busy with my band. Finishing off the recording process and sorting out our tour in September.

But anyway, Advertising.

I worked on some product thoughts whilst on the road and have generally been taking in what i've learned from my London Crits and how i can use that experience and knowledge that i got out of it to make my book much better.

Starting formal work again as of tomorrow so i'm excited to get a pen back in my hand and start scribbling. I feel ready to make this next book now and take it down to London in August if all goes well!

Album & Ideas.

This week my attention has been directed to a different project. I'm busy recording a debut album with my band Fall Short! Conform!

Which should take up the next couple of weeks. It's really exciting and i can't wait to have some new stuff recorded. It's been a while since we last recorded and it went well on the first day tracking drums. I'm fully aware this doesn't really concern 'advertising' directly, but it's part of my creative output so i thought it was worth sharing!

Having some new ideas for my book and some thoughts on how to make it something memorable and different. Still in the early stages of this but thinking time is needed! Plan to stick some stuff out of my most recent book up at some point but short on time at the moment so bare with me :)

Also; Scamp blog is hosting a live chat with Dave Trott to discuss his book 'How to get your first job in Advertising' today (Tuesday 10th June, 9am.) Should be good and just hope i can catch it at some point!

The London Visit.

Back after 3 days of Crits, meetings and very useful advice. Overall i had a great time and met some really important people which was brilliant.

Day one:

RKCR/Y&R - Very helpful advice from Jo and Stephen. They said a few of my campaigns were a little confused and that i need to step back from my work and look at it in a different light, this was quite a common pattern that i found throughout the appointments but as i was also told numerous times, a partner would be able to help me with that.

On a positive note, they liked some of my strategies and told me to work through those with a more concise execution. Also said to go back next time

DDB - Quick meeting with Dave Henderson to show him my book and the work i did for a VW brief i managed to get my hands on. Really liked my work for the VW brief, especially the line i used. Again my book was a little confused and needs to be more focused. Also managed to see Chris and Andy who have just joined from AMV, they said it was great i was down in my first year trying to get opinions and pointers on my work. Both said to go back anytime and stay in touch which was really positive.

Lowe - Great meeting with Peter Reid, loved some of my strategies and just thought i was a little confused and again thought a partner could really help me develop.

M & C Saatchi - This was the big one, end of the day, meeting with Graham Fink. More than a little worried i have to admit after some of the things i was told. In reality it went incredibly well and it was one of the most inspiring conversations i've had in a long while. Despite telling me i need to start again with my book, he actually liked one of my strategies. That was enough really, after i thought he was going to kill me. No mention of needing a partner, just advice to put myself into my work and that no one can be like me so my work should show that. Great advice from him and he even said to go back and see him any time. With or without work, but just for a chat. That in itself was a great end to the day.

Day two:

JWT - First appointment on day two was with Mike Mckenna. He told me to get myself a partner as it will be incredibly hard to get anywhere near a placement without one. Again my thoughts were a little confused and i need to make my point clearer. But good advice from him and again he said to go back and see him next time i'm down.

Saatchi & Saatchi - Here i saw Levi and Dave. Both thought my work was mad and very funny which was quite a pleasant surprise. Loved my strategies and making an appointment to see them again next time i'm down. Also commented on me going down during my first year and that is was great that i was being so pro-active.

Red Brick Road - Next it was Dan and Andy. Told me to work on some of the strategies i'd done and said i was brave to be down so early into my course and to email them some work down whenever i like which was really kind of them.

TBWA/ - This appointment got cancelled/ never happened unfortunately. Mix up with who i was seeing so i'll have to try and go next time i'm down.

Day Three:

Wieden + Kennedy - Early start in Shorditch with Fabian and Ida. Said my work should be clearer and have bigger idea's. Also said they don't consider anyone for placement who is still on a course but some good advice and great to get in to see them.

BBH - Mad dash across London to get here in time, lovely building and a great meeting with Rosie Arnold. Had a look through my work and chatted about how difficult it can be to find the right partner. Loved some of my strategies and said to work on them and keep in touch for when i'm next in London. Suggested some good stuff to read and was generally lovely and talked to me about BBH and her experiences which was great to hear.

CST - I'd seen Dave Trott before when i went to one of his talks on an evening and was great to see him again one to one. Had some great advice for me and told me that i need to make myself really stand out. I'm selling myself as much as the work in my book. Gave me a copy of 'How to get your first job in Advertising' and answered some questions i had about the business. Interesting insights on partners and made me really think about what i'm doing and things i need to change, in a positive way though! Just great to get to see him and listen to his advice first hand.

Mother - Last appointment of the 12 and i felt that i had already learnt loads and my book didn't really represent me particularly well anymore. Despite this i had a fantastic meeting with Stuart. He flicked through my book and looked through my strategies too. Thought there were some good thoughts there and they just needed more clarity. Had a great chat with him about other things i do outside of Advertising and he said to stay in touch and make arrangements to go down for a placement. At this point i was really shocked! Totally unexpected, but brilliant and i'm already taking steps to push myself and my work further.

Overall i had a great time and looking back can't believe some of the people i have had the opportunity to see! Really positive feedback on my ideas and basically just need to make my thoughts more concise and clear, aswell as a bit more visual. Great experiance and i've got more out of it than i thought i would of! Everyone was so positive and for everyone to say to go back and see them was fantastic. Thanks to everyone who saw me, it will defintly improve my work and helped me see that i'm selling myself and everything i do, whether it be music i write, videos i make or anything creative i'm involved in.

Work for the next book begins now!

Today i started reading a new book

The Timewaster Letters by Robin Cooper.

I think it's the funniest book i've ever read (so far anyway) I'm usually pretty skeptical when people tell me about a book they think is good because i'm quite particular on what i read but i would recomend it to everyone. It's basically a load of letters this guy has sent to Garden Centres, Book Publishers etc and sends them his ideas for a book or a garden product or just straight out ridiculous stuff! It's daft but hilarious.

Anyway the point of this blog is about me and Advertising. The story goes, i'm putting together a book with which i will take down to London at the beginning of June, i've got a lot of products done already and loads more to do, aswell as having done some live briefs for a couple of agencies.
